Is it a bird? Is it a plane? You tell us after learning all about bird watching

Bird watching is a great way of making the most of the green spaces and beautiful nature around us.

However, it can be quite a daunting activity to begin with as those involved are known for having a wealth of knowledge.

Do know fear, whether you have been spotting swallows for decades or are trying to get a glimpse of your first finch, bird watching provides a calm thrill that can be unmatched.

Here are a few tips on how to ignite your interest in the pastime.

Choosing where to go to watch birds may seem like a difficult choice, however birds are all around us so you will not need to venture far.

Whether heading to your nearest nature reserve, park or even in your own back garden, anywhere that you hear the gentle chirping, you can bird watch.

While learning about the various species of birds you are watching, there are a few aspects to pay particular attention to.

The bird’s size, colours and patterns should be observed, as well as what it was doing, whether it was by itself and what noise it was making.

Keeping track of these aspects can help you to go on to recognise that bird in the future.

Make sure you have a notebook handy to jot down these observations, this will also act as a great call-back to read through as your skill develop.

Even consider doing a small sketch of the birds, if you are skilled enough to, this is an ideal way of remembering what the bird looked like.

The best way of learning about each species is to go bird watching with a friend or acquaintance who is experienced in the activity who can help to guide you throughout.

Failing this, there are a whole range of guide books, apps and websites you can very easy find which will list characteristics and colourings of birds to match your discoveries with.
